Valentine's crafts for kids

A day for telling the people we love how much they mean to us, with cards, hearts and kind words.

Kids can make pop-up heart cards, heart-flap greeting cards, paper heart chains for the window, animals built from paper hearts and torn-paper collage hearts. Toddlers love fingerpainting or sticking tissue onto a big heart template, while older children can try a spinning 3D card or a lion made from hearts.

What is Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day is celebrated on 14 February. It takes its name from St Valentine: early accounts describe several Christian martyrs called Valentine, and in AD 496 Pope Gelasius made 14 February St Valentine's Day. The link with love came much later – Geoffrey Chaucer's poem Parlement of Foules, written in 1382, is often cited as the first real connection between the day and romance. In Britain, the Penny Post, introduced in 1840, helped make Valentine's cards affordable for everyone. Today, for children aged 3 to 11, Valentine's Day is a lovely chance to celebrate everyone they care about – family, friends, grandparents, teachers and even pets. Homemade cards are the heart of it: pop-up hearts, heart chains, heart animals and simple collages are easy for little hands, and writing a kind message inside is great early writing practice. It's also a good moment to talk about kindness and friendship, so crafts that are made to give away work especially well.

Valentine's Day falls on Sunday 14 February 2027.

How to make a pop-up heart card

A simple make to start with. Grown-ups handle anything sharp or hot.

  1. Fold an A5 piece of card in half to make your card.
  2. Cut a strip of white paper about 21 cm long and 6 cm high, then concertina-fold it into six sections about 3.5 cm wide.
  3. Draw half a heart on the top layer with its middle on the folded edge, letting the sides run to the edges so the hearts stay joined.
  4. Cut out the shape without snipping through the joins, then unfold to reveal three linked hearts.
  5. Decorate the hearts by gluing smaller red hearts in the middle or drawing patterns.
  6. Glue the two end hearts to the inside of the card so the chain pops up when it opens.
  7. Decorate the front and write a kind message inside.

Valentine's Day questions

What Valentine's crafts are suitable for toddlers and young children?

Hearts are perfect for small hands. Toddlers can fingerpaint hearts, stick torn tissue or collage scraps onto a big heart template, or decorate a simple folded card with stickers and crayons. Preschoolers can glue paper hearts into animals or a lion face, with a grown-up cutting the shapes. Red Ted Art's heart crafts for toddlers and preschoolers has plenty more gentle, mess-friendly ideas.

What materials do I need for Valentine's crafts?

Most Valentine's makes need red, pink and white card or paper, glue sticks, child-safe scissors, crayons or felt tips and a printer for templates. Tissue paper, stickers, sequins and glitter glue add sparkle, and an A5 piece of card folded in half makes a good base for a pop-up heart card. Cotton buds, sponges or fingers work well for painting hearts.

Are there Valentine's activities for EYFS and KS1 classrooms?

Yes. Little Owls Resources has 36 free Valentine's printables for EYFS and KS1, including heart number bonds to 5 and 10, colour-matching hearts, counting puzzles, a florist role-play pack, card templates and heart bunting. Card-making is great for fine motor skills and early writing, and paper heart chains bring in folding, symmetry and cutting practice.

Can I print the templates on A4 paper?

Yes. First Palette's heart templates and heart greeting card templates are made to print on A4 or Letter paper or card, and the other templates we link to print on standard A4 from a home printer. If part of a design is cut off, choose 'fit to page' in your print settings. Thin card works best for cards that need to stand up or pop up.

How do we keep Valentine's crafts safe for children?

Keep sequins, gems and other small decorations away from babies and toddlers – the Child Accident Prevention Trust warns that anything smaller than a 2p coin can choke a young child. Don't give young children balloons to blow up, choose LED candles over real ones for a cosy table, and keep anything with a button battery, such as LED tea lights, well out of reach.
