Nowruz crafts for kids

Persian New Year on the first day of spring, with a special table of seven things and painted eggs.

Children can grow sabzeh from wheat or lentils, decorate eggs with natural dyes or on printable egg outlines, make a paper goldfish and colour in hyacinths, all ready for a haft-seen table. Toddlers love watching seeds sprout, while older children can help gather and arrange the seven 'S' items.

What is Nowruz?

Nowruz, also spelled Norouz or Navruz, is the Persian New Year. Its name means 'new day', and it begins at the spring equinox, the moment spring starts. The festival is more than 3,000 years old and is celebrated by millions of people in Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, the Caucasus and beyond, including many families here in the UK. Before Nowruz, families give their homes a big spring clean and often buy new clothes. A highlight is the haft-seen table, set with seven items whose Persian names begin with the letter 's', such as sabzeh (sprouted wheat or lentils), sib (apples) and sir (garlic). Families often add a mirror, candles, painted eggs, hyacinths, coins and goldfish. Nowruz is a time for family gatherings, special food, music and poetry, and gifts, especially for children. On the thirteenth day, called Sizdah Bedar, families traditionally take their sabzeh outdoors and throw it into running water. Growing sabzeh, painting eggs and making paper goldfish are lovely ways for children to join in and learn about the festival.

Nowruz begins at the spring equinox, which in 2027 falls at 20:24 UK time on Saturday 20 March.

How to grow sabzeh for Nowruz

A simple make to start with. Grown-ups handle anything sharp or hot.

  1. At least a week before Nowruz, soak a quarter to half a cup of wheat grains or lentils in water for one to two days, changing the water once to three times a day.
  2. Drain the seeds and spread them on a paper towel; tiny white sprouts should start to appear.
  3. Wrap the seeds in the damp paper towel, set the bundle in a sunny spot and sprinkle it with water a few times a day for one to two days.
  4. Line a shallow dish with paper towel, spread the sprouting seeds evenly over it and cover them with another damp paper towel.
  5. Keep the seeds covered and sprinkle them with water at least three times a day for about two more days.
  6. Remove the cover, place the dish in the sun and water morning and evening. Sprinkle, don't drench.
  7. Put your green sabzeh on the haft-seen table to welcome the new year.

Nowruz questions

What Nowruz crafts are suitable for toddlers and young children?

Growing sabzeh or cress is perfect for little ones, because they can sprinkle seeds, water them and watch them sprout day by day. Toddlers can also paint patterns on paper egg outlines, colour in hyacinths or stick tissue paper onto a paper goldfish. A grown-up can handle any real eggs and hot dye pots while children choose the colours and help arrange the haft-seen table.

What materials do I need for Nowruz crafts?

For sabzeh you'll need wheat grains or lentils, a shallow dish, paper towels and water. Egg decorating needs hard-boiled eggs or paper egg templates, paint or felt tips, and natural dyes such as red cabbage, beetroot or turmeric if you want to try dyeing. A paper plate, card, glue, child-safe scissors and a printer are handy for goldfish, hyacinth colouring pages and other templates.

Are there Nowruz activities for EYFS and KS1 classrooms?

Yes. Growing sabzeh is a hands-on way to explore seeds, growth and the start of spring, linking to understanding the world and science. Talking about how families spring-clean and share a haft-seen table supports learning about different cultures and celebrations. CBeebies has short Nowruz films for younger children. Invite families who celebrate to share their own traditions, food or decorations if they would like to.

Can I print the templates on A4 paper?

Yes. The goldfish template, egg outlines and colouring pages we link to print on standard A4 paper. First Palette designs its printables for A4 or US Letter, and if anything looks cut off, choose 'fit to page' or 'scale to fit' in your printer settings. Print the goldfish onto thin card if you want to trace it onto felt or foam.

How do we keep Nowruz crafts safe for children?

Let a grown-up handle boiling eggs and natural dye pots, and if anyone gets a burn, the NHS advises holding it under cool running water for 20 minutes. Keep haft-seen candles out of children's reach, or use LED candles instead. Store dried seeds, coins and other small objects away from babies and toddlers, and check for egg allergies before any egg activities in class.
