Mother's Day crafts for kids

A Sunday for saying thank you to mums and the people who look after us, with cards, flowers and treats.

Children can make a handprint flower card, a fingerprint heart balloon card, paper heart flowers or a colour-in printable card for Mothering Sunday. Toddlers can manage painted handprints with help, while older children can try pop-up cards, origami tulips and handmade bookmarks. Most ideas need only card, paint, glue and scissors.

What is Mother's Day?

In the UK, Mother's Day is also known as Mothering Sunday. It falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday, so the date moves each year. That is why the UK date is different from Mother's Day in the USA, which is always the second Sunday in May. Mothering Sunday has church roots. From around the 16th century, people would visit their 'mother' church, the main church or cathedral of their area, on this Sunday. Later it became a day when servants and apprentices were given time off to visit their mothers and families. Today it is a day to say thank you to mums, and to grandmothers, carers and other special grown-ups, with cards, flowers, breakfast in bed and homemade gifts. Many nurseries and primary schools make cards and crafts in the week before. For children aged 3 to 11, a handprint card or paper flower made at home is a lovely keepsake, and most ideas need nothing more than card, paint and glue.

In the UK, Mothering Sunday falls on Sunday 7 March 2027, two months before Mother's Day in the USA on Sunday 9 May 2027.

How to make a handprint flower pot card

A simple make to start with. Grown-ups handle anything sharp or hot.

  1. Paint your child's hand with washable paint, press it onto white paper twice and leave the prints to dry.
  2. Print the free flower pot template, or draw your own pot on coloured paper, and cut it out.
  3. Cut out the handprints, six leaves from green paper and a few small hearts from yellow paper.
  4. Tape a green paper straw to the back of each handprint and stick two leaves onto each straw.
  5. Glue a yellow heart in the middle of each flower, then tape the stems to the front of a folded card.
  6. Glue the pot over the bottom of the stems and write a message to Mum inside.

Mother's Day questions

What Mother's Day crafts are suitable for toddlers and young children?

Handprint and fingerprint cards are perfect for toddlers: a painted hand becomes flower petals, and fingertip prints make heart balloons. Sticking tissue paper, colouring a ready-made card and decorating a paper flower are easy too. Older children can try pop-up cards, origami tulips, paper heart flowers or a handmade bookmark as a small gift.

What materials do I need for Mother's Day crafts?

Card or thick paper, washable paint, glue sticks, child-safe scissors, crayons or felt tips and a few pom-poms or paper straws cover most Mother's Day makes. Tissue paper and coloured paper are great for flowers. A printer helps for card templates and colouring pages, but plenty of ideas, such as handprint cards, need no printing at all.

Are there Mother's Day activities for EYFS and KS1 classrooms?

Yes. Handprint flowers, fingerprint cards and colour-in cards suit EYFS, while KS1 children can add a short message or poem and try simple pop-up or paper flower cards. Be sensitive to family circumstances: let children make a card for a grandparent, carer or another special grown-up if they would prefer to.

Can I print the templates on A4 paper?

Yes. The card templates and colouring pages we link to print on standard A4, and some, like KiddyCharts' cards, come in both Mum and Mom versions, so pick the UK one. If a template from a US site looks cropped, choose 'Fit to page' in your print settings. Printing cards onto thin card helps them stand up on a shelf.

How do we keep Mother's Day crafts safe for children?

Use washable paint for handprints and wash hands afterwards. Keep buttons, beads, sequins and pom-poms away from under-threes, because the Child Accident Prevention Trust says anything smaller than a 2p coin can choke a young child. If children are making breakfast in bed, a grown-up should handle the kettle, toaster and hot drinks.
