When is St George's Day in the UK 2027/2028? Friday 23 April 2027 and Sunday 23 April 2028.
St George's Day is celebrated in England on 23 April. St George is England's patron saint, and he is best known for the legend in which he defeats a dragon. Historically, George is thought to have been a Roman soldier who was martyred for his Christian faith around AD 303, and he is the patron saint of several other countries and regions too. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and the red rose is England's national flower, so flags and roses appear in lots of celebrations. St George's Day is not a bank holiday, so most children mark it at nursery, school or home. For 3 to 11 year olds, the dragon is the star of the show: friendly dragon puppets, paper knights with shields, crowns for acting out the story, red paper roses and flag bunting are easy, cheerful ways to join in. It's also a good moment to talk about courage and kindness, keeping the story gentle for younger children.
St George's Day falls on Friday 23 April 2027; it is not a bank holiday in England.

Toddlers can colour an England flag, dab fingerpaint roses or decorate a lion or rose mat from the Little Owls pack. Preschoolers enjoy the DLTK cut-and-paste dragon and paper knight, with a grown-up helping with the trickier cutting. Keep the dragon friendly β a smiley sock puppet or a colourful mask is far more fun for little ones than a fierce one.
Most St George's Day makes need white and red card or paper, glue sticks or PVA, child-safe scissors, crayons or felt tips and a few toilet rolls. For dragons, add green or red felt, an old sock, googly eyes and lolly sticks for masks. Red crepe paper or coloured paper towel and green pipe cleaners make simple roses. A printer is handy for templates.
Yes. Little Owls Resources has a free St George's Day pack for EYFS and KS1, with England flag colouring and bunting, rose and lion decorating mats, rose counting puzzles and fingerpaint roses. Kiddycharts offers a free activity eBook with bingo, a word search, an acrostic poem and a dragon story planner, which works well for KS1 writing. Crowns and dragon masks are great for role-play.
Yes. Kids Craft Room's dragon sock puppet pattern is designed as two A4 pages, and First Palette's crown templates print on A4 or Letter card. A few sites, such as DLTK, are based outside the UK, so if part of a template is cut off, choose 'fit to page' in your print settings or set the margins to zero. Thin card is best for crowns and masks.
Supervise younger children and keep googly eyes, beads and other small parts away from babies and toddlers β the Child Accident Prevention Trust warns anything smaller than a 2p coin can choke a young child. Use child-safe scissors, let grown-ups make any holes or use hot glue guns, and keep puppet strings and bunting out of reach of babies and toddlers.
