Vaisakhi crafts for kids

A spring harvest festival and the Sikh new year, with parades, music and sharing food with everyone.

Children can colour Vaisakhi sheets showing the Khanda, a Gurdwara and a dhol drum, make bright paper or tissue paper flowers to decorate the home, paint a paper plate kite in saffron orange and yellow, and listen to a Vaisakhi story before drawing the Nagar Kirtan procession. These crafts suit ages 3 to 11 with a grown-up's help.

What is Vaisakhi?

Vaisakhi (also spelt Baisakhi) is celebrated on 13 or 14 April each year. It began as a spring harvest festival in the Punjab, and for Sikhs it is one of the most important days of the year because it marks the founding of the Khalsa in 1699. That Vaisakhi, the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, asked a large gathering who was willing to give their life for their faith. Five volunteers came forward and became the Panj Pyare, or 'Beloved Five'. They were initiated with amrit, a sweetened water, and became the first members of the Khalsa, a community of committed Sikhs. Today Sikhs go to the Gurdwara for a special service, and outside the Nishan Sahib flag and its flagpole are washed and raised again. Many towns hold a colourful Nagar Kirtan procession with singing, led by the Panj Pyare, and Gurdwaras serve free langar meals to everyone. In the UK, big Vaisakhi celebrations take place in cities such as Birmingham and London. Crafts, stories and sharing food are lovely ways for children to learn about the festival.

In 2027, Vaisakhi falls on Wednesday 14 April.

How to make a paper plate kite for Vaisakhi

A simple make to start with. Grown-ups handle anything sharp or hot.

  1. Cut a paper plate into a diamond kite shape (a grown-up can help).
  2. Draw lines to divide the kite into four sections, then paint each section in bright colours such as saffron orange and yellow.
  3. When the paint is dry, outline each section with a black marker.
  4. Print the free template, cut out the tail shapes and trace them onto coloured paper.
  5. Cut out the paper shapes and glue them together to make the kite's tail.
  6. Glue the tail to the bottom of the kite and add a length of wool so you can hang it up.

Keep scissors and craft knives out of young children's reach and let a grown-up do any sharp or tricky cutting.NHS

Keep small craft bits such as buttons, beads and googly eyes out of reach of babies and toddlers, as small objects are a choking risk.NHS

Keep cards, bunting, paper decorations and flowing clothes well away from candles, diya lamps or incense, and never leave a flame unattended.London Fire Brigade

LED tealights and fairy lights can contain button batteries, so check battery covers are secure and store spare batteries up high.Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT)

Vaisakhi questions

What Vaisakhi crafts are suitable for toddlers and young children?

Toddlers and pre-schoolers can scrunch tissue paper into bright flowers, paint a paper plate kite in saffron orange and yellow, or colour a simple Gurdwara or dhol drum picture. Listening to a short story about a family's Vaisakhi, such as the BBC's Sach and Grandad's Vaisakhi Celebration, is a gentle way to introduce the festival before you start crafting.

What materials do I need for Vaisakhi crafts?

You will need paper and thin card, tissue paper, paper plates, child-safe scissors, a glue stick or PVA, felt-tips or paints and a printer for templates. Saffron orange and yellow paper look bright and festive, and green sugar paper makes good flower stems. Wool or string turns a paper plate kite into something you can hang up.

Are there Vaisakhi activities for EYFS and KS1 classrooms?

Yes. Tissue paper flowers, paper plate kites and colouring sheets suit Reception and KS1, while BBC Bitesize and BBC Teach have free films about Vaisakhi, the Khalsa and the Gurdwara. RE:ONLINE gives teachers a short background guide. Treat the Khanda and other Sikh symbols with care, and invite Sikh families to share how they celebrate if they would like to.

Can I print the templates on A4 paper?

Yes. The colouring sheets, flower template and kite template we link to print on standard A4 paper. Choose 'fit to page' in your print settings if anything looks cropped. Thin card makes kites and flowers sturdier. The In The Playroom Vaisakhi sheets are free but ask for an email address before you download, and Activity Village printables need a Premium membership.

How do we keep Vaisakhi crafts safe for children?

Let a grown-up handle scissors for tricky cuts and keep small items like beads and buttons away from babies and toddlers. If you light candles or diya lamps at home, never leave them unattended and keep paper flowers, kites and decorations well away from the flame, or use LED lights instead. Wash paint and glue off hands after crafting.
