When is Harvest Festival in the UK 2027? usually late September or early October; schools and churches choose their own day (around 26 September 2027). (approximate)
Harvest Festival is a traditional British celebration that gives thanks for the crops gathered from the fields and for the food we have. The word harvest comes from the Old English hærfest, meaning autumn. Harvest celebrations go back a long way, but the church harvest festival we know today took shape in the mid-19th century, when clergy began decorating churches and bringing produce into services to give thanks, and hymns such as All Things Bright and Beautiful became harvest favourites. Today, churches and schools hold harvest services and assemblies, sing songs, decorate with fruit, vegetables, flowers and harvest loaves, and collect food for local food banks and people in need. Children often learn where their food comes from, from farm to plate, and families enjoy autumn activities such as making scarecrows. Some places hold bigger events too, from cathedral flower festivals to pumpkin festivals. There is no fixed national date, so check your school or church newsletter for when yours is held.
There is no single national date for Harvest Festival: UK churches and schools usually hold it on a Sunday near the Harvest Moon, towards the end of September or sometimes in October.

A paper plate scarecrow, a painted paper plate harvest basket filled with paper fruit and vegetables, and apple or potato printing are all perfect for little hands. Toddlers love sticking, so a sweetcorn or apple collage works well too. Keep tiny items like dried beans and seeds for older children, as anything smaller than a 2p coin can be a choking risk.
Paper plates, poster paint, coloured paper, glue sticks and child-safe scissors cover most harvest crafts. Add real fruit and vegetables for printing, as apples and potatoes work brilliantly, plus a brown pen for basket weave patterns. For a traditional corn dolly you'll need wheat stalks, soaked in water to soften them, along with raffia and ribbon.
Yes. CBeebies' My First Festivals follows a farming family through harvest time, and BBC Teach has a free harvest assembly video about where food comes from. In class, children can make harvest baskets and scarecrows, sort fruit and vegetables, print with produce and help collect food for a local food bank. Trussell suggests checking with your nearest food bank first to see what's needed.
Yes. Printables such as the Red Ted Art harvest basket and scarecrow puppet can be printed on A4 at home; choose 'fit to page' in your print settings if any edges look cut off. Print puppets and baskets onto thin card so they're sturdy enough to cut, colour and hang up, especially if little hands will be playing with them.
Wash hands before eating and after preparing raw fruit and vegetables. Cut grapes lengthways into quarters and avoid whole nuts for under-fives. Check for food allergies before sharing harvest treats, keep small craft bits like seeds and dried beans away from toddlers, and supervise scissors. When collecting donations, check with your local food bank about what it needs most.
