Kids can make shamrocks – wrapped in green wool, glued from paper hearts or painted – plus rainbows with cotton wool clouds, pots of gold, jointed leprechaun puppets and Irish flag bunting. Toddlers enjoy tearing paper for a rainbow or playing with green-and-gold play dough, while older children can try quilled shamrock cards.
When is St Patrick's Day in the UK 2027/2028? Wednesday 17 March 2027 and Friday 17 March 2028.
St Patrick's Day is celebrated on 17 March. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is remembered for bringing Christianity to the Irish. A well-known legend says he used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity – one God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit – which is why shamrocks appear everywhere on St Patrick's Day. In Ireland the day is both a religious feast day and a national holiday, and in the UK it is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland. People of Irish heritage around the world wear green and join in parades and festivals, including a big St Patrick's Festival in Dublin. For children aged 3 to 11, it's a bright, cheerful celebration that's easy to bring into craft time: shamrocks, rainbows, harps, pots of gold and playful leprechauns from Irish folklore all make simple makes for little hands. It's also a good chance to talk about Ireland, its flag and its traditions, and about why green is the colour of the day.
St Patrick's Day is Wednesday 17 March 2027, a bank holiday in Northern Ireland.

Rainbows and shamrocks are ideal. Toddlers can tear coloured paper to fill a rainbow outline, add cotton wool clouds, or squish green-and-gold play dough and hunt for hidden coins. Preschoolers can glue paper hearts into a clover, colour a simple shamrock or wrap wool round a cardboard shamrock with a grown-up cutting the shape. Keep each activity short and focus on the fun of sticking and squishing.
Gather green card and paper in a few shades, coloured paper for rainbows, cotton wool, glue sticks or PVA, child-safe scissors and crayons or felt tips. Green wool and some cardboard make a yarn-wrapped shamrock, while split pins, a hole punch and string bring a jointed leprechaun puppet to life. Gold paper or chocolate coins add a pot-of-gold finish.
Yes. Little Owls Resources has a free St Patrick's Day pack for EYFS and KS1, with colouring sheets, shamrock and harp decorating mats, Irish flag bunting, fact cards and banners. NurtureStore's leprechaun's play dough brings in counting and number formation, rainbows are great for colour names and order, and DLTK's shamrock crafts include lacing cards and scissor-skills practice.
Yes. The templates we link to print on standard A4 paper from a home printer. A few sites, such as DLTK, are based outside the UK, so if part of a design is cut off, choose 'fit to page' in your print settings or set the margins to zero. Thin card works best for puppets and hanging decorations.
Stay with younger children while they craft and keep small items such as split pins, sequins and chocolate coins away from babies and toddlers – the Child Accident Prevention Trust warns anything smaller than a 2p coin can choke a young child. Use child-safe scissors, keep wool and hanging strings out of reach of babies, and put glue and paint away once you've finished.
