St David's Day crafts for kids

Wales' special day, when people wear daffodils and leeks and celebrate the Welsh dragon.

Children can make paper daffodils – spinning windmills, pop-up cards or tissue-paper collages – plus red Welsh dragon puppets and masks, Welsh flag colouring and a toilet-roll St David. Toddlers enjoy sticking yellow tissue onto a daffodil outline, while older children can try a 3D pop-up card or a cut-and-glue paper dragon.

What is St David's Day?

St David's Day is celebrated every year on 1 March. St David, known in Welsh as Dewi Sant, is the patron saint of Wales. He was born in the early 6th century, became a monk and founded churches and monasteries, and St Davids Cathedral in Pembrokeshire is believed to stand on the site of his monastery. He is remembered for the saying 'Gwnewch y pethau bychain' – 'Do the little things' – a lovely message to share with children. On St David's Day many people wear a daffodil or a leek, the national emblems of Wales, and the daffodil is the national flower. Schools often hold an eisteddfod with music, poetry and dance, and some children wear traditional Welsh costume. The red dragon on the Welsh flag makes dragons a favourite craft too. St David's Day is not a public holiday, so most children celebrate at home, nursery or school. For 3 to 11 year olds, paper daffodils, red dragon puppets, Welsh flag colouring and pop-up cards are easy, cheerful ways to join in.

St David's Day falls on Monday 1 March 2027; it is not a public holiday in Wales.

How to make a paper daffodil windmill

A simple make to start with. Grown-ups handle anything sharp or hot.

  1. Cut a 15 cm square of yellow card, or paint white card yellow on both sides.
  2. Cut a single cup from an egg box and paint it yellow or orange to make the daffodil's trumpet.
  3. Lightly draw a line from each corner towards the middle, then cut along each line, stopping about 2 cm from the centre.
  4. Fold in four of the points to the middle and staple them in place – a grown-up can help with the stapler.
  5. Roll a strip of green card into a tube to make the stem.
  6. Join the trumpet, flower and stem with a split pin, leaving the hole loose so your daffodil can spin.

St David's Day questions

What St David's Day crafts are suitable for toddlers and young children?

Daffodils are perfect for little hands. Toddlers can stick scrunched yellow tissue paper onto a daffodil outline, make a handprint daffodil card, or colour a Welsh flag with chunky crayons. Preschoolers can try the DLTK cut-and-paste dragon, coloured red for Wales, or decorate a dragon mat from the Little Owls pack. Keep sessions short and let a grown-up handle any cutting that needs precision.

What materials do I need for St David's Day crafts?

You'll mostly need yellow, orange, green and red card or paper, yellow tissue paper, glue sticks or PVA, child-safe scissors and crayons or felt tips. Egg boxes make brilliant daffodil trumpets, and split pins or a stapler hold a daffodil windmill together. For dragons, add red paper, googly eyes and lolly sticks for masks. A printer helps for templates, but many daffodil crafts can be drawn freehand.

Are there St David's Day activities for EYFS and KS1 classrooms?

Yes. Little Owls Resources has a free St David's Day pack made for EYFS and KS1, with colouring sheets, Welsh flag bunting, a decorate-the-dragon mat, banners in Welsh and English, and Welsh counting sheets. Daffodil windmills and pop-up cards build cutting and folding skills, and St David's saying 'Do the little things' is a gentle starting point for talking about kindness.

Can I print the templates on A4 paper?

Yes. The templates we link to print on standard A4 paper from a home printer. A few sites, such as DLTK, are based outside the UK, so if part of a template is cut off, choose 'fit to page' in your print settings or set the page margins to zero, as DLTK suggests. Thin card works best for pinwheels, masks and anything that needs to stand up or spin.

How do we keep St David's Day crafts safe for children?

Stay close while children craft and keep small parts such as googly eyes, beads and split pins away from babies and toddlers – the Child Accident Prevention Trust warns anything smaller than a 2p coin can choke a young child. Pinwheels need a pin or split pin, so a grown-up should do that step. Keep craft knives and hot glue guns for adults, and tidy glue and paint away afterwards.
