When is Passover in the UK 2027? Wednesday 21 April 2027 to Thursday 29 April 2027.
Passover, called Pesach in Hebrew, is one of the most important festivals in the Jewish year. It remembers the story of the Exodus, when the Israelites, led by Moses, left slavery in Egypt, and it is a celebration of freedom. Outside Israel, including in the UK, it usually lasts eight days. On the first evening, families and friends gather at home for the seder, a special meal during which everyone reads the story from a book called the Haggadah. Children play a big part: they ask the Four Questions, lean on cushions as a reminder that they are free, and hunt for a hidden piece of matzah called the afikoman, often winning a small prize for finding it. The seder plate holds six symbolic foods, including bitter herbs called maror and a sweet paste called charoset. Throughout Passover, Jewish families eat matzah, a flat bread, because the Israelites left Egypt in such a hurry that their bread had no time to rise. Crafts such as seder plates, afikoman bags and story scenes help young children follow and enjoy the evening.
In 2027 Passover begins at sunset on Wednesday 21 April, with the first seder that evening, and ends at nightfall on Thursday 29 April in the UK.

Toddlers and pre-schoolers enjoy colouring pages of the seder plate, matzah and the four cups, and they can help glue cupcake cases onto a paper plate seder plate while a grown-up writes the labels. Simple props, such as soft toy frogs, a decorated cup for Elijah or a cushion to lean on, help little ones join in at the seder table. Keep activities short and hands-on.
For most Passover crafts you'll need paper plates, mini cupcake cases, a glue stick, felt tips or crayons, child-safe scissors and a printer for the templates. A shoebox, blue paint, tissue paper and a little sand make a Red Sea scene, and fabric or a paper bag works for an afikoman bag. If you bake matzah together, you only need plain flour, water, a rolling pin and a fork.
Yes. Retelling the Passover story with puppets or a shoebox scene supports communication and language, and talking about why families share special meals links to understanding the world and RE. Making a seder plate helps children learn the names of the six symbolic foods, and BBC Bitesize has a clear 'What is Passover?' guide for older pupils. Always present the festival respectfully and welcome Jewish families to share their own traditions.
Yes. Most of the colouring pages and printables we link to print well on standard A4 paper. Some come from American sites designed for US Letter paper, so choose 'fit to page' or 'scale to fit' in your printer settings to avoid the edges being cut off. Print the seder plate colouring page on thin card if you want it to last through the meal.
Let a grown-up handle the oven if you bake matzah, as it cooks at a very high temperature, and keep festival candles well out of reach. The NHS advises that whole nuts should not be given to children under five, so use ground nuts or a nut-free recipe for charoset, and always check for allergies before any food tasting in class. Keep small craft pieces away from babies and toddlers.
