When is New Year in the UK 2027/2028? Friday 1 January 2027 and Saturday 1 January 2028.
New Year's Day falls on 1 January and is a bank holiday across the UK. Most of the fun happens the night before, on New Year's Eve, when families count down the last seconds to midnight, cheer as the clock strikes twelve and often watch fireworks, either at a public display or on television. In Scotland the celebration is called Hogmanay, and some families keep up the custom of first-footing, when the first visitor of the new year arrives with small gifts such as coal or bread to wish the household well. Many people also make New Year's resolutions: little promises about things they would like to try or do better in the year ahead. For children aged 3 to 11 the wait until midnight can feel very long, so lots of families hold an early countdown instead, opening a bag or making a craft every hour. Party hats, noisemakers and paper fireworks are quick to make with things you already have at home, and a simple memory sheet about the year gone by makes a lovely keepsake.
New Year's Day 2027 is Friday 1 January, a bank holiday across the UK; in Scotland the 2 January holiday moves to Monday 4 January 2027.

Simple ways to keep New Year crafts safe and fun.
The safest place for families to enjoy fireworks is a professionally organised public display rather than a home display.RoSPA
Do not give sparklers to children under five, and make sure older children wear gloves and hold sparklers at arm's length.RoSPA
Put used sparklers straight into a bucket of cold water, because they stay dangerously hot after the sparks stop.RoSPA

For toddlers and pre-schoolers, keep it simple: colour in a printable party hat, stick tissue paper streamers onto a cardboard tube to make a quiet firework blower, or print bursts of paint onto black paper with a bundle of pipe cleaners. A grown-up can do the cutting and taping while little ones decorate. Countdown bags work well too, because you can celebrate 'midnight' at teatime.
Most New Year crafts use things you already have at home: paper or light card, a printer, child-safe scissors, a glue stick, sticky tape, felt tips or crayons and some poster paint. Cardboard tubes, paper plates, tissue paper, wool and pipe cleaners are handy extras. A length of elastic turns a paper cone into a proper party hat, and black paper makes painted fireworks really stand out.
Yes. Counting down from ten, making paper clocks and ordering the hours to midnight all support early maths, while talking about favourite memories and wishes for the year ahead links to personal, social and emotional development. Firework printing and paper plate hats build fine motor skills. Older KS1 children can write a simple resolution or fill in a 'year in review' sheet for a cheerful January display.
Yes. Most of the templates we link to print on standard A4 paper or light card. A few come from American sites designed for US Letter paper, so choose 'fit to page' or 'scale to fit' in your printer settings to stop the edges being cut off. Light card works best for party hats and countdown clocks because it holds its shape when you roll or fold it.
Leave fireworks to the professionals: RoSPA says the safest place to enjoy them is a professionally organised public display. If you use sparklers, RoSPA advises not giving them to under-fives, wearing gloves and putting used sparklers in a bucket of cold water. At the craft table, a grown-up should handle any craft knife, and small bits such as sequins and pom-poms should be kept away from babies and toddlers.
