Eid al-Adha crafts for kids

A festival about sharing and kindness, when Muslims remember Ibrahim and give food to people who need it.

Children can make a fluffy paper plate sheep with cotton wool, a printable sheep basket or bobbing paper sheep, Eid Mubarak bunting and pop-up mosque cards, and a simple tawaf model showing pilgrims going around the Ka'bah. Sheep crafts are popular because of the story of the Prophet Ibrahim that lies at the heart of the festival.

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha, the 'Festival of Sacrifice', is one of the two main festivals in Islam. It falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, at the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah, which Muslims who are fit and able to afford it should make at least once in their lives. The festival remembers the Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to obey God, who gave him a lamb to offer instead of his son Isma'il. Families who can afford it give Qurbani, an animal sacrifice, and the meat is shared between family, friends and people in need; in Britain this is done at a slaughterhouse. Eid usually begins with prayers at the mosque. Families wear their best clothes, visit relatives and friends, share special meals, give gifts to children and give to charity so that everyone can celebrate. Because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, the date moves earlier each year. Cuddly sheep crafts, cards and bunting are a gentle way to share the festival with young children.

In the UK, Eid al-Adha 2027 is expected on or around Sunday 16 May (beginning the evening of Saturday 15 May), though some calendars give Monday 17 May; the exact date depends on the moon sighting.

How to make a paper plate sheep for Eid al-Adha

A simple make to start with. Grown-ups handle anything sharp or hot.

  1. Brush PVA glue all over a paper plate.
  2. Press fluffy pieces of cotton wool across the plate, leaving a space in the middle for the face.
  3. Draw a simple oval face with two small ears on paper using a black felt-tip pen.
  4. Cut out the face (a grown-up can help) and glue it into the centre of the plate.
  5. Stick on two googly eyes, or draw the eyes on for younger children.
  6. Leave it to dry, then display your sheep with an Eid Mubarak message.

Simple ways to keep Eid al-Adha crafts safe and fun.

Keep small craft bits such as buttons, beads and googly eyes out of reach of babies and toddlers, as small objects are a choking risk.NHS

Keep scissors and craft knives out of young children's reach and let a grown-up do any sharp or tricky cutting.NHS

Keep cards, bunting, paper decorations and flowing clothes well away from candles, diya lamps or incense, and never leave a flame unattended.London Fire Brigade

Eid al-Adha questions

What Eid al-Adha crafts are suitable for toddlers and young children?

Paper plate sheep are perfect for little hands: brush PVA glue over a plate and let your child press on fluffy cotton wool, then add a paper face. Toddlers can also stick cotton wool onto a card lamb, colour Eid Mubarak pictures or help decorate bunting. A grown-up should cut out the shapes and help with any googly eyes.

What materials do I need for Eid al-Adha crafts?

Most Eid al-Adha crafts need paper plates, cotton wool or cotton balls, white, black and coloured paper or card, PVA glue, a glue stick, child-safe scissors and felt-tip pens. Googly eyes are fun but can be swapped for drawn eyes for the youngest children. Printable sheep baskets and tawaf models just need a printer, thin card and glue or a split pin.

Are there Eid al-Adha activities for EYFS and KS1 classrooms?

Yes. Cotton wool sheep, Eid cards and bunting suit Reception and KS1 and link nicely to topics on celebrations, animals and caring for others. For older pupils, BBC Bitesize explains Eid ul-Adha and Hajj, and RE:ONLINE gives teachers a short background guide. Focus on prayer, family, sharing and charity, and invite Muslim pupils to share their traditions if they wish.

Can I print the templates on A4 paper?

Yes. The sheep basket, Eid gift basket, bobbing sheep and tawaf templates we link to download as printable files that fit standard A4 paper. Choose 'fit to page' in your print settings if anything looks cropped. Thin card is best for baskets and the bobbing sheep, while plain paper is fine for colouring pages. Red Ted Art's templates come through a free $0 Gumroad checkout.

How do we keep Eid al-Adha crafts safe for children?

Cotton wool, googly eyes, beads and split pins are small enough to cause choking, so keep them away from babies and toddlers and supervise closely. Keep scissors with grown-ups, cover the table for glue and paint, and wash hands after crafting. If you are sharing Eid treats, remember whole nuts are not suitable for children under five.
