Easter crafts for kids

Christians celebrate Jesus coming back to life, and we have egg hunts, bonnets and chocolate eggs.

Kids can make an Easter bonnet from a paper plate decorated with tissue paper flowers and pom-pom chicks, colour and cut out printable Easter egg templates, create handprint chicks or lambs, and fold pop-up Easter cards. Toddlers enjoy finger painting and sticking, while older children can try woven paper eggs and origami.

What is Easter?

Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar. Christians remember Jesus dying on the cross on Good Friday and celebrate their belief that he rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. The Church of England describes Easter as a celebration of new life and hope, and eggs are a symbol of that new life. The week leading up to Easter is called Holy Week and begins on Palm Sunday. Easter moves each year, falling in March or April, and Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays in England and Wales. Alongside church services, many UK families enjoy seasonal customs: chocolate eggs, egg hunts in gardens and parks, and hot cross buns, which are traditionally eaten on Good Friday. Many nurseries and primary schools hold Easter bonnet parades, where children show off hats decorated with flowers, chicks and eggs. For children aged 3 to 11, Easter crafts are a lovely way to talk about spring, new life and the Easter story, whether you are making a bonnet for the school parade or colouring eggs at the kitchen table.

In 2027 Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, between the Good Friday (26 March) and Easter Monday (29 March) bank holidays in England and Wales.

How to make a paper plate Easter bonnet

A simple make to start with. Grown-ups handle anything sharp or hot.

  1. Ask a grown-up to make a small hole on each side of a paper plate, near the edge.
  2. Paint the plate or cover it with coloured card or tissue paper, then leave it to dry.
  3. Cut leaves and spiky grass from green card and glue them around the rim.
  4. Scrunch tissue paper into flowers and stick them on as a bouquet or along the brim.
  5. Make chicks from yellow pom-poms with felt beaks and googly eyes, and glue them among the flowers.
  6. Thread ribbon or string through the holes and tie it in a loose bow under the chin.

Grown-up rules

Simple ways to keep Easter crafts safe and fun.

Keep small craft bits such as pom-poms, googly eyes and buttons away from young children, as anything smaller than a 2p coin can choke a young child.Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT)

Keep small objects and small toys out of reach of children under three, so check egg-hunt prizes before you hide them.RoSPA

If a child swallows a button battery, such as one from a light-up toy, take them to the nearest A&E straight away.Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT)

When baking hot cross buns, use the back rings of the hob, turn pan handles inwards and keep small children out of the kitchen where possible.RoSPA

If a child is burned by an oven tray or glue gun, cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes and don't put creams, butter or plasters on it.NHS

Easter questions

What Easter crafts are suitable for toddlers and young children?

Toddlers and preschoolers do best with big, simple makes: finger-painted eggs, handprint chicks or lambs, tissue paper stuck onto an egg template, or a paper plate bonnet decorated with pre-cut shapes. Keep sessions short and let them lead. Children aged 5 to 11 can move on to pop-up cards, woven paper eggs, origami and more ambitious bonnets for a school parade.

What materials do I need for Easter crafts?

Most Easter crafts use everyday supplies: paper plates, coloured card, tissue paper, child-safe scissors, glue sticks or PVA, crayons and washable paint. For bonnets, add ribbon, pom-poms, felt, pipe cleaners and paper flowers. Cereal boxes and egg boxes from the recycling work well too. Leave the hot glue gun to grown-ups and use PVA or tape for little hands.

Are there Easter activities for EYFS and KS1 classrooms?

Yes. Easter fits neatly into EYFS and KS1 topics on spring, new life and festivals. Try egg counting and sorting, letter or number egg hunts, potato-printed chicks and lambs, small-world farm play and an Easter bonnet parade. For RE, free KS1 assemblies and church resources explain the Christian Easter story simply and respectfully.

Can I print the templates on A4 paper?

Yes. Most templates we link to are PDFs or images that print on standard A4. A few come from US sites designed for Letter paper, so choose 'Fit to page' or 'Scale to fit' in your print settings to avoid cutting off the edges. For bonnet decorations, egg cards and anything that needs to stand up, printing onto thin card makes them sturdier.

How do we keep Easter crafts safe for children?

Supervise scissors and keep small bits such as pom-poms, googly eyes and beads away from under-threes; the Child Accident Prevention Trust warns that anything smaller than a 2p coin can choke a young child. Grown-ups should handle hot glue guns and the oven when baking hot cross buns, and check egg-hunt treats suit the ages taking part.
