A free printable saltire to colour in blue and white β a simple first St Andrew's Day activity for little ones.
Open on Pawprint Family βScotland's national day, remembering Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland.
Kids can make a blue-and-white saltire flag (try a torn-paper mosaic or a printable colouring sheet), a purple thistle from pom poms, paper shapes or bubble-wrap prints, a woven paper tartan, or a shaggy Highland cow from a toilet roll or felt. Toddlers love tearing and sticking; older children can try a bagpiper paper doll.
When is St Andrew's Day in the UK 2026/2027? Monday 30 November 2026 and Tuesday 30 November 2027.
St Andrew's Day falls on 30 November and is Scotland's national day. St Andrew is Scotland's patron saint. He was one of Jesus's apostles and, before that, a fisherman, which is why some St Andrew's Day activities feature fish alongside flags and thistles. Scotland's flag, the saltire, is a white diagonal cross on a blue background. A popular legend tells of a king who prayed for help before a battle and then saw a white X-shaped cross against the blue sky, which he took as a sign from St Andrew. In Scotland, St Andrew's Day is an official bank holiday. Many schools and nurseries mark it with Scottish stories, songs, poems, Scots words and crafts. For children aged 3 to 11, it's a lovely excuse to make a saltire flag, print a purple thistle (Scotland's national flower), weave a paper tartan or build a shaggy Highland cow. Families anywhere in the UK can join in too β it's a fun way to learn about Scotland's symbols and stories.
St Andrew's Day is Monday 30 November 2026, a bank holiday in Scotland; in 2027 it falls on Tuesday 30 November.

Keep it simple and sensory. Toddlers can tear blue tissue paper for a saltire collage, press painted bubble wrap onto paper for a thistle print, or colour a large saltire outline with chunky crayons. Preschoolers can try the DLTK cut-and-glue thistle, with a grown-up doing the trickier cutting. Choose one short activity, cover the table, and let them enjoy the sticking rather than aiming for a perfect finish.
Most St Andrew's Day crafts use everyday supplies: white and blue card, blue tissue paper, masking tape, PVA glue and spreaders, child-safe scissors, crayons or felt tips, and green and purple paint. For thistles add purple wool or a small pom pom maker; for a Highland cow add brown felt and orange or brown yarn. A printer helps for templates, but many makes need none at all.
Yes. Little Owls Resources offers free St Andrew's Day printables written for EYFS and KS1, including saltire colouring, flag bunting, kilt designs and a bagpipes multimat. A saltire mosaic is good fine motor practice, tartan weaving brings in pattern, and the legend of the saltire makes a lovely story-time link. For older pupils, the Scots Language Centre's schools resource suggests researching St Andrew, the saltire and Scots sayings.
Yes. Flag Color Codes offers its Scotland flag outline as an A4 PDF, and most of the templates we link to print happily on standard A4 paper. Some sites, such as DLTK, are based outside the UK, so if part of a template is cut off, choose 'fit to page' in your print settings or set the page margins to zero, as DLTK suggests. Thin card is best for anything that will be handled a lot.
Sit with younger children while they craft and keep small parts such as pom poms, googly eyes and beads away from babies and toddlers β the Child Accident Prevention Trust warns that anything smaller than a 2p coin can choke a young child. Use child-safe scissors, keep sharp tools and hot glue guns for grown-ups, and put glue and paint away as soon as you've finished.
